Game Show
What is a game show?
A game show is a television programme that contains contestants that competes against each other to win a prize. They have a competitive element to it. It gives the audience a chance to test their knowledge even though the audience doesn't get a prize but a different game show offers competition to the audience. They try to attract everyone's one's attention to the game show.
This will help me this unit because this will help me understand what a game show is.
What are the main sub categories of game shows?
Adventure orientated
This is mainly based on an activity that the contestants have to do it doesn't matter if it was a physical activity or a puzzle activity.
The video I chose was Wipeout because it gives an excellent example of contestants taking part in a game show that is based on the activity but the activity was physical rather than a puzzle.
Dating game shows
This is mainly based on contestants that are trying to find their perfect match. This is mainly like a quiz.
The video I chose was take me out because it is a dating game show it is a quiz tyoe of game show where they are asked different questions to see who is the match for the person or not.
Panel orientated game shows
This is where there are teams competing against each other. Both teams have a team captain. The panel will contain celebrities.
The video I chose would I lie to you because it had a panel of celebrties that had team captains that are competing against each other. They ask facts about the contestants where some of the facts are true or not.
Puzzle orientated game shows
This is where the contestants have solve puzzles that have been set in different formats. They will have a specific time to complete. They would add to the contestants money if they get it correct but if they are wrong they would stay the same.
The video I chose catchphrase because it is puzzles that are being solved by the contestants. The contestants had a certain amount of time to complete the puzzle
Quiz orientated game shows
This is where the contestants have to answer a series of questions that are from different categories.
The video I chose the chase because they get questioned a series of questions from different categories and win money within the specific amount of time this depends on how many questions they get right

Tipping Point analysis
The set is in a Tv studio and can be reused. The set colour is blue and silver to show that it mainly aimed at an older generation. The contestants and the host has a podium to sit behind while the shows going on. The light is bright at first but starts to dim down to bring in tension. The props that they have is Buzzers and podiums. The host of tipping point holds the cards at the podium. The host has a comedic factor that appeals to the target audience. The host is male, but he doesn’t have an assistant. They applied for tipping point. They are all different ages and have different backgrounds. They would link to the game shows target audience. They have good personalities. Each counter that drops they win a certain amount of money. There is no live audience. The game shows music is intense, and it gives the show suspense. The tipping point counter. When they push the buzzer and the counter drops from the top of it and gets pushed so they can get counters which are money. The host hasn’t used a catchphrase yet. The contestants introduce themselves. The host introduces the show. There hasn’t been any conflict yet but they are building the game up. All of the contestants are hoping that they win the game.
The cube airs on the challenge channel it is on at 4 pm but on the plus one channel, it is on at 5 pm because that's when the target audience is home to watch it. The language of the game is formal because of the target audience. The content of the game show is that they are trying to get the jackpot prize but they are all determined to pass each challenge to win the jackpot prize. They have nine lives. The cube falls into the puzzle sub-genre because they have to solve different puzzles. The primary target audience is people that are aged over 30 years old, the secondary target audience is people that are aged 19- 29 and tertiary target audience is people that are aged under 18. The programme encourages the target audience to take part while they are at home so that they can test their knowledge. The opening title is a graphic that is fast-paced. The title looks like it is made out of paper with the cube in the background. The host introduces the show and the contestants at the beginning after the opening title.
The narrative sequence is that they start to introduce the show and the contestants. He asks the contestants questions about what they have that makes them think they can beat the cube. The contestants go through different challenges and try to win the prize. The technology they use is lasers and graphics. The prize that they use in the game show is a large amount of money. The host uses catchphrases but I haven't picked up on any. The contestants are nervous but the host keeps them calm.
The set is based in a studio the colour of the set is mainly red. The lighting is bright but it gets dimed to bring dramatic tension. The camera captures different angles of the show to keep the audience interested. The contestants dress them selves do their hair and makeup themselves. The hosts wear suits. We discussed our initial idea of what we want our game show to be, look like and how we want the structure. We discussed the set design. We couldn't decide a name for our game show. I started my questionnaire. We recorded our first production meeting about our idea

How to be a successful host?
A game show host should be friendly with the contestants so that they feel comfortable.
A game show host is successful because they revise the questions and read about the topic so that they are familiar with the topic. Game show hosts should be able to provide the contestants with rules of the game show and to introduce the show confidently. They should keep the audience and the contestants interested they do this by having a bit of banter with the contestants but they have to be able to manage the game and bring the contestants back when they go off-topic. They should be able to make the contestants feel good when they are leaving the show some hosts do this with a smile. They should be able to interview the contestants. They should repeat the score so everyone knows what score the contestants. They should be able to make the viewers at home feel like they could play along. The hosts should be able to contestants calm as they could be nervous. They should be enthusiastic so that they can encourage the contestant. They could have a comedic or serious factor so that they appeal to the target audience. They hold cue cards that have the question and answers on and to introduce the contestants. Game show hosts are often male so they would have a female assistant.
This will help me make my game show because it will help by making sure that our game show host knows how to be successful. What I need to do next is to search the rules for a game show.
Game show rules and regulations?
The rules for a game show should be simple and easy to follow so that the contestants can't be confused. The host and contestants should review the rules before the show so that they know them. The rules should be clear so that the contestants know how to score points throughout the game show. They should be consistent with the rules. They should be fair for each contestant. Some shows may change the rules while they are playing the show. Some shows may have rules like the contestant's cant un buzz once they have buzzed to answer the questions. With the rules, it makes the show more enjoyable.
This will help me to know how to write the rules and regulations for our game show. What I need to do next is to research what music is suitable for a game show.
What music is suitable for a game show?
Music for game shows is upbeat and easy to remember. They serve an important purpose. The music should be able to capture the audience attention straight away. The music makes the feelings clear. Quiz shows are full of great music. Theis genre hardly gets the respect it should get. Each track is well made and they are easy to remember. The best game show music is fixed into the pop culture. The different game show segments normally have their music to go with it to tell the audience what is happening. When the game changes or starts a new round starts. It doesn't matter if a contestant is winning or is losing the game show the music will change the viewer's mood. Game show music is catchy. The music should build tension when the contestant is answering a difficult question.
This will help me to know what type of music to choose for our game show. What I need to research next is the SFX for game shows.

What I need to complete is making sure I have detailed answers. I still need to research the set, graphics and production roles. I need to do this before Wednesday but I want to have some done before Monday. For this, I will use different sources. I will improve on my commentary.
Game shows graphics
Opening title
Opening titles don't need to last for long. It includes the name of the game show and some animations it with music to go along with it. The use of colour depends on the colour scheme of the show but some shows don't keep the same colour. Game show opening title music is upbeat and fast-paced. For example, the chases opening title lasts for about 15-30 seconds long or longer but it tells the audience the name of the show in the name of the show it has a man running through it to tell the audience that it is the chase. The chase used red and silver in their title but throughout the show they use blue. The music in the chase is fast-paced and upbeat. They use SFX like the clapping the whooshing when the man is running through the title.
Segment
Segment graphics don't last long I'm not sure but I think that they last for about 15-30 seconds or longer. It includes the name of the show, the segment title, SFX and music. The colour of the graphic can be different like the chase or the same colour as the tipping point. The music that they use is upbeat and fast-paced, for example, tipping points background music.
Lower banners
They don't last long. They tell you the contestants names, the timer or how much time they have left and they give the audience the social media details. The use the same colours as the segments and opening title. They don't normally use music but if they do they would use music that is upbeat and fast-paced. They would use SFX and effects in the graphics.
What I found out is that the graphics shouldn't last for long. This will help me create mine so that I don't create one that is too long so it doesn't make my audience lose interest
Set design
The game shows set designs is different.
Gameshow is sometimes set in front of an audience. The set is based in a television studio. The set and props can be reused and it is cheap to purchase. The hosts and contests either sit or stand at the podiums. The set and the props have a colour scheme that is set. They use light to bring up the dramatic tension from the spotlights and from being dimmed. The hosts and the judge wear the suits but the contestants wear their own clothes do their own hair and makeup. They use props like podiums, buzzers and more. Some studios are able to film it back to back unless it is a new show. They are brightly coloured and the lighting is bright.
This is an example of the chases set it is base in a television studio. The set and props can be reused. As you can you see the contestants and the judges have a podium where they can sit but the host doesn't have a podium to sit down. The lighting brings out the dramatic tension. The contestants do the their own make up, hair and dress them selves. They use props like podiums, buzzers and more.

This is an example of the tipping point set that is based in a television studio. The set and props are much cheaper because they can be reused. In the image, you can see that the hosts and the contestants each have a podium to stand at. Each contestant has a buzzers so they can buzz in. The lighting is brightly lit. The purple square has circular lights but this is to make the audience focus on the tipping point machine this causes tension. The contestants do their own makeup, hair and dress.

What I researched about the set design but I learned that the sets have bright colours and that they are brightly lit.
SFX - What they use in a game show.
In a game show, they use SFX to grab the audience's attention to the game show.
The sounds they use in the game shows is:
-
Buzzers
-
Wrong bell
-
Correct bell
-
Clock ticking
-
Count down
-
A ding
-
Crowd noise
-
Crowd clapping

Content - Guess the celebrity
I found out that you can play it a number of ways.
One to play it is you have a board and paper with the celebrity underneath and they have to remove the paper one by one to see who it is. The second way to play is to have a jar full of celebrities names and they have to pick a name and try to describe the celebrity. They can place it on their head or their back. The third way is similar to the second way but they can act it out. They have to do it in a limited time.
We choose the first way to play but we can decide can change our minds of how we want it to play. But need paper and a board to put the celebrity on and to reveal.
What I found out is that there is a number of different ways to play it. This gives us more option to choose from.

Production role- camera operator
Camera operators is to make sure that they capture everything that is happening. For game shows and multi camera productions it is good because you are able to capture things that are scripted and spontaneous. For this you need to be able to move the camera fast and smoothly. Good communication. Multi camera production it saves time editing . The camera operators are responsible to capture different angles. You are able to shoot scenes quicker. I need to be able to use different angles to keep the viewers interested. It double the coverage of the whole set. Need to be able to multi task.
This will help me know what I need to do. This will help me to do my role to the best of my ability.
Questionnaire analysis

This question asked the audience what their age is most of the audience was between the ages of 13-16, 17-20 and 21-25. We as a group decided that we wanted to aim for our age group which is 16-19.
I found out that females took my questionnaire more than males. This also means that I have different perspectives of both genders this will help me know what both genders want in a game show.

This tells me that we should have buzzers so the contestants can answer the questions. We should have podiums as they were popular as well. I think that we can consider the other things that were put forward but this can always give me more ideas that I can put forward to the group.
This chart tells me that the audience wants the hosts personality to have a comedic feature. This will make the audience more interested because they will be able to have a laugh but also test their knowledge. This is something that I can put towards the group.

We had trouble to come up with a name for our show. The most popular name that they gave me was guess who this will help us a group to decide a name and to be a bit more creative. This will help our show so that people can put a name to the show
In the question they said that Green, black, blue and grey were the most popular colours. This will help us as a group decide what colour we should use for our set design

This question will help me know what sound effects they expect to hear in a game show. This will help me in editing as well. The most popular sound effect they said was the clicking noise and the explosion so I will take these into consideration
This question asked the audience what type of music is suitable for game shows the most popular is classical. This shows that they would prefer classical music in the game show.

This helped me to understand what activities the audience would want to see on a game show they said that they wanted to se both mental activities and physical activities. This helps me because or game show has a mixture of both.
They said that they would like to see a number of different things. the most popular one was pranks but they said they would like to see games, music, challenges and guess the song. This will help us as a group to devlop our idea.

The questionnaire helped me to think of more creative things to improve our set design and our idea. I found out that they would want us to name our show guess who so wIill take this to my group and propose this idea.
Focus Group (1) (1)
00:00 / 02:15
For this focus group, they asked relevant questions. They asked about the host having a Russian accent they said it was a good idea to have. They said that the set should look mainly if it had a Russian accent. They would want to see a lot of colour in the game show. The music should be upbeat and lively. They said for the content they would want music. They disagree with geography but they said that they would like a spelling bee because with the Russian accent it would be funny. The sound effects should be frequent but to reserve them for things like right and wrong answers. I think that I went well except for at the beginning when they were talking to each other. I think that they should have laid out some rules so it would be more successful.
All the research that I have done whether it was primary or secondary. They both gave me knowledge of what we should consider and how things are done and why. This will help my idea because has given me more information.
