Radio Forms

BBC radios

BBC radios have  6 stations in total.

BBC has a Royal Charter that has been issued by the queen which means that they don't carry any adverts but they are funded by the TV license that we pay for.  Each of these radio stations has a different target audience. They have 50 regional stations throughout the UK. They have national stations that include radio 1, 1XTRA, 2,3,4,5 live and 6.

Commercial and Independent and Regional radios.

Commercial radios are similar to the BBC but the radio is funded by the TV license but commercial are funded by advertising and just like the BBC they are national. Regional Radios can be delivered by the BBC.

Example of these are classic FM, capital, kiss, BBC local radio, heart and  magic

Community radio

Community stations serve the community interests of a non-profit basis. They broadcast content that is most popular to the community and to a specific audience of the community. They are operated, owned and they are influenced by their community. They provide to the whole of the communities or a specific area of interest like ethnic group, age group or an interest group. People can listen to stations that provide experimental music while other stations are aimed at younger people, religious communities or the armed force and their families.

Modern radio

DAB- Digital Audio Broadcasting

They are the only current platform that offers the benefits of digital radio which you can listen at home and on portable radios and that has a range of local and national free-to-air service the majority of the UK.

Hospital

Hospital radio stations are produced especially for the patients that are in the hospital that is mainly in the UK. The radio station is mainly to uplift them and aid them in recovery.

Student Radio

Student radio is run by students of the college, university or any other educational institution. The program may be completed by students or it may include other programmers from a wider community in which the radio station is based.

What is a radio ident?

Radioi has two different idents one being a station ident and the other being a program ident. The program ident tells us the name of the programs and who is presenting it whereas the station ident tells us the stations name and the frequency. The different idents are a program and stations identification that advertise the different programs and the station to the audience by introducing the next program and the schedule of the shows that are coming on. They normally  lasts about 10-20 secs long and is normally animated. They inform the audience on what the show contents and who it is suited for. This allows the audience to know what they are listening to and their brand. They break up the show's schedule and keep the audience interested. It has a short piece of music that is broadcast between the programmes so that the audience can recognize a radio station.

BBC radio 1 ident

In this video, it has a different ident in it but each of the idents lasts for about 10 seconds long. They are used at the beginning of the program, before and between the songs, between the programmes and the end of the programme. The ident includes music that is upbeat. SFX is used on the voice-over to animate it. The content that is includes the station's name and frequency. They say lines like they are the one they put all this information so as the audience we know what we are listening to. The radio one's target audience is 15-29-year-olds and it should also provide some programming for younger teenagers. The radio station link to their target audience because it's upbeat and the beats are current today. The Ident promotes the brand by using the music the target audience like and using key information that they need to know.

Hearts radio ident

As the first ident from before this one has many different idents combined. They all last about 20 seconds long. They come at the beginning, between programmes and songs, the come before songs and at the end of the programme. The idents include upbeat music, it has a voiceover that has SFX  to animat it to keep the audience engaged. The ident includes information like the station's name, the title of the programme, the presenter and the frequencies of the show. This is all included so that the audience knows what they are listening to. this station links to their target audience because their target audience is for people that are aged between the age 25-44 so they use current beats that sound like the music they would listen to. The ident promotes the station brand by telling the audience the key information and using music that their target audience would listen to.

Kiss ident

This one also is a mashup of the different idents from kiss. They each last about 10-20 seconds long. The ident includes information like the frequencies, station and program name and presenters name. They also include music that is upbeat, voice-over that has SFX. The information is important so they know what they are listening to. This normally appears at the beginning between programmes and music and appears at the end of the programme. What they include links to their target audience very well because their target audience is aged 15-34. This links because the music they listen to is on the charts. This all promotes the brand because of the music they listen to is upbeat and they know what they are listening to.

Does video games affect behaviour:

Psychologists have confirmed that playing violent video games is linked to aggressive behaviour. A review of studies found that exposure to violent video games was a "risk factor" for that can increase aggression. The same team of experts said there was insufficient evidence to conclude that the influence of games such as Call Of Duty and Grand Theft Auto led to criminal acts. The findings have prompted a call for more parental control over violent scenes in video games.

The research demonstrates a consistent relation between violent video game use and increases in aggressive behaviour and  decreases in pro-social behaviour, empathy and sensitivity to aggression." No single influence led a person to act aggressively or violently. Rather, it was an accumulation of risk factors that resulted in such behaviour.

The rating system for video games took the rating of violence more serious and rated to the players age.

Production meeting 2 research
00:00 / 05:46

Discusion on what I need to continue researching and what I need to research next.

I need to continue researching the music into more detail because I can find more information about the upcoming artist and what genre is played on a drive time show. What I need to research next is the target audience because I can find out more about the target audience and what they like and dislike and why they like or don't like a specific thing on drive time show. It also means that I can find about who listen to drive time shows. I can also research social awareness to find out more information like why does it happen and has it currently happened.

Focus Group
00:00 / 15:01

For  the first question, everyone in the focus group said that they would like to hear music that is upbeat, fast-paced, Chilled, relaxing and  popular music they said this because people are on the way home or to work so they would want these to encourage and calm them down before they get to where they are going to. They also said funny stories and jokes so that they can have some fun. They also said news of what's happening in college and with celebrities. This will help my research because it can give me an idea of what they want to hear in a drive time show. Some people said relaxing and chilled music I think that if we did this some people will turn off because some might be going to a part-time job or somewhere else so I think that they would want upbeat music that encourages them.

Question two some said that they will get involved with the competition if there was a prize they also said that this will eager the audience this will help my research because it will help me know what makes the audience take part. Most of the people from the focus group said a quiz or guess the name of the song or artist. This will help my research because it will help to know what the audience enjoy and why they would enjoy it. A call-in was a good suggestion because this would make the presenters and the audience interact with each other this will help my research on how to get the audience and the presenters interacting with each other. It will also help because this gives more information on how to get them more interactive on social media. They also said guess a celebrities catchphrase from a film or their personal use. This would help research because we would have to research the famous catchphrases and who used them. All of this will help my research because it will make us think of competitions we can do and prizes to get the audience engaged and eager.

Question 3

Most of the focus group said that they want an informal, comedy and relaxing presenter style. They said that they want to hear jokes and wants us as presenters to bounce off each other so that they are more engaged and interested. They said they wanted the language to be informal but what people that is outside of the target audience would understand. They wanted to have a bit off mature and serious because if we are reading the news we want it to be serious so that the audience know that they know we are not joking. They want to use to be bubbly so that if they are getting ready to go to work they are encouraged. I think tht this will help my research and my idea because we know what we should do and how to keep the audience engaged.

Question 4

In the focus group, they said they wanted to the content a mix of college life like a trip, what's going on during the week and to keep us informed if something has happened during the day. They said that they wanted to hear some politics which I think is not going to be useful because the target audience won't want to hear politics. They said weekly news which will be interesting for the new segment this will keep the target audience updated. We could talk about what is happening during the week and next week. This will help us know what to include in the radio show and what will engage the audience.

Question 5

With this question, everyone in the focus group said that they would want music that is upbeat. Musi that is on the charts to aim at the younger target audience. They said that we could have a live performance from an upcoming artist. They said they would like to hear a new upcoming artist and new songs. They said Christmas songs because we are in the Christmas spirit but not too much due to some people may not celebrate Christmas. This will help me do my radio show so that I know what genre of music they would like to hear on a drive time radio show.

Daily Dairy

29/11/19

I need to complete bibliography and continue adding to it. I also need to continue my secondary research and my questionnaire. I need to finish the focus group analysis and upload my bibliography over the weekend.

Interacting with social media

We could use social media to find new listeners.

Social media is where listeners are at and where you need to be as well. Most radio stations use social media to listen to what people talking about locally and nationally. It connects business, volunteers and organizations. It allows people to know about the radio stations. It helps promote the shows and what is going on in the area. It helps to signpost presenters at events to get interviewees and contributors to the show. Helps to build a better partnership.

They use facebook to connect with friends, family and anybody in the world.

Twitter is simple and they update the followers and the current locations. Linkedin is for the most popular professional network for individuals and for businesses that are similar. Instagram is easy to share photos and videos from the radio shows and events. Social media can have its rights and wrong. The social media strategy can be brilliant. Whatever you are sharing you must be aiming at your target audience. You must post what is relevant for you

You need to get to know your listeners and what social media they use most often. It helps to promote your radio show.

Presenters style:

  • Comedic

  • Relaxed

  • Calm

  • Serious

  • storytelling

  • Informal

  • Bubbly

  • Change of tone

  • Mature

Ways to be a good presenter:

  • Pre-read the script before going on air

  • Promote the next shows and presenters

  • Paint the picture with words.

  • Learn new skills

  • Know your audience

  • Being respect and calm

  • Active on social media

  • Be prepared

  •  Be good at storytelling

Questionnaire analysis

For the first question, we asked for their age. We got more response from people who are aged between 16-18 these are part of our main target audience. People aged 19-21 is also part f our main target audience. We got responses from our territory target audience from age 22-25 and 26+. This shows that they would listen to the show as well. We got responses from ur younger teenager audience from the age 13-15. All this help my research by knowing that the target audience has put their input in.

We asked this question to know that we have both genders input and that we know what they both like to hear in a drive time radio show. The male gender replyed the most but we still got a lot of responses to from females. I have noticed that both of the percentages add up to over 100 so this means that some people may have ticked both boxes rather than one.

For this question, we asked what they would expect to hear in a drive time radio show they all said different things like music, jokes, the news, competitions and things that are happening to locally or nationally. This helps us know what they would like to hear during the drive time radio show. Most of the responses said that they wanted music this tells us that the different age groups want to hear music whether it is on the charts or from an upcoming music artist.

This question we asked if they like our title rush hour. Most of  have our responses said that it was a good name for a drive time radio show as it is when people are on the move either on their way home or to work.

For this question we asked what would encourage them the audience  listen to a radio drive time show. I found out that they gave  different answers like music, competitions, news, debates and discussions. They said do things to get the audience involved and where they could win a prize.

We asked what genre of music they would like to hear on a drive time radio show. The highest percentage was for a UK rap this includes grime and more. I think they said this because they like this genre and they would like to hear it on a drive time radio show. They also said that they would want to hear Pop, hip-hop, R&B, Indie,Rock and metal. A few people said that they would want to hit Kpop, a mix of all above and reggae. This will help with our

For this we asked about social awareness mental heath is the most popular along side gang violence and Under 18 pregnancies. Others said crimes and murders, underage drinking and smoking and politics. Embarrassing stories is not a social awareness. People in the target audience  wont want to hear politics.

We wanted to understand what type of competition they would take part in. The most popular responses  was quiz and trivia questions by calling in. Others said that they would take part in a treasure hunt and guessing games . This shows that the target audience would highly take part in a quiz or trivia questions by calling in. It helps with the research because we know what is popular for the target audience.

This  will help my research because we know what will engage the audience to listen and what makes them interact with the drive time radio shows. Most people said that they would expect to hear something entertainment. They said celebrity gossip, debates on current affairs, fashion segment, film and TV and games. Whereas others said that they would like to hear about life skills I think that this brings new ideas of what we could talk about.

Daily Diary

2.12.19

Today we had a production meeting and discussed what we need to continue to research. We did our questionnaire analysis in period 1 and continued it into Sarah's lesson and made sure that it was detailed and related it to our research . I used my coomuniucation skills and my analysis skills.

Most people said that they would like to interact with Instagram and snapchat as they are the most popular social medias to use now a days but others said that they would like to interact with twitter and Facebook which is not really popular but it is still good to interact with. This helps us with research because it we know what social media platforms are popular and ones that are mostly used.

Production meeting 3
00:00 / 03:04

We had a long discussion but the zoom wasn't recording. So discussed our research on our questionnaire and found out that the audience preferred mental health rather than knife crime. So we said that we would do mental health as the social awareness topic and have a debate about knife crime. We also said that they preferred quiz and trivia questions so we are going to put the quiz and the trivia questions together and come up with questions from different topics that they can call in and get interactive. We said that we are going to research different things. I will do the news along with Shamaim and come up with questions for the quiz.

Target  audience

Our main target audience is 16-21, The secondary target audience is 22-25 and our terity 13-15  has not listened to speech-based radio stations. They mainly use their mobile phones to listen to the radio.  They don't want to hear a long news bulletin that is about politics they want something short and snappy and informative so they don't get bored. They like to listen to the radio because they have good discussions on what is relavent to our target audence. They use DAB nowadays to stream the radio stations. They want to hear music that is from new upcoming artists.

Half of all knife crime offenders in London are teenagers or even younger children.

The police statistics show that 41 per cent of those being caught for knife crimes across London’s boroughs are now aged between 15 and 19 year  olds but the other 8 per cent are younger in age range from 10 to 14, in a sign of how carrying and using blades has become part of life for a minority of troubled young people. The new figures came as a Scotland Yard chief warned that attacks in the capital were also becoming “more ferocious” as offenders who were “more and more young” tried to kill or injure by “getting up close and stabbing someone several times”. Chief Superintendent Ade Adelekan, the head of the Met’s Violent Crime Task Force, added that police were striving hard to tackle the problem and “making some progress” by upping stop and search and using other tactics, including the deployment of “embedded” plain clothes officers to work with uniformed counterparts in the worst hit communities to help police intervene before stabbings occurred.

But he admitted that officers were having to “re-educate” themselves on how to conduct stop and search after losing “the art and skill” during recent years when  they are  under pressure from the government  their use of the tactic had declined to “negligible” levels.

Mr Adelekan’s comments follow the fatal stabbing of two London teenagers - Jaden Moodie. 14, and 17-year-old Nedim Bilgin  last month and a succession of other young knife fatalities in 2018. Both killings have already prompted intense concern about the way in which young Londoners are being caught up in knife crime

The new statistics disclosed by Mr Adelekan provides the most comprehensive illustration so far of the strikingly young age profile and background of London’s knife offenders.

He said that the perpetrators of knife crime which the Office for National Statistics last week showed at a near record level of just under 15,000 offences in a year  were overwhelmingly young males with almost half aged between 10 and 19.17 per cent were aged between 20 and 24, meaning that the under-25s account for two thirds of all knife crime in the capital.

On ethnicity, Mr Adelekan said that 73 per cent of knife offenders and 53 per cent of victims were from a black or ethnic minority background. Many were from more impoverished communities and possessed similarities with each other that needed to be understood if sustained falls in knife crime were to be achieved.“Violence is top of the agenda for the Met and knife crime injury victims under 25 are 15 per cent down,” he said during an address to the policy debating organisation Westminster Insight. “There’s still plenty of work to be done, but we are heading in the right direction.“Part of our success around this has been down to increasing our use of stop and search. There were 15,000 done in November, compared to July when there were roughly around 9,000. So there’s been a significant increase.“We are also making sure all our recruits go through stop and search training and frontline officers are re-educated around stop and search… because what our officers were finding on the streets, we haven’t done stop and search in quite a while, there were people walking round carrying a knife, there was lots of confrontation because we hadn’t done it in quite a while and probably lost the art and skill of having the conversation without it descending into confrontation. So we are sort of learning as we go along.”

Mr Adelekan said the Violence Crime Task Force, which was set up last April and now has 300 officers, was also using 24 hour intelligence gathering, combined with a high profile overt presence, covert operations, and other confidential tactics to target offenders

He warned, however, that “we cannot enforce our way out of this - prevention and intervention is the key” and added: “Attacks are more ferocious. We had 135 homicides in 2018 and 79 of those were knife homicides.
