Group 1: Visual albums

  • Visual albums have existed for the past half-century.

  • People never truly defined what these albums actually consist of.

  • The videos run together to tell a story along with the lyrics and music of the album. he Beatles released what could be considered one of the first visual albums with 1964’s A Hard Day’s Night.

  • Artists have played around with the form.

  • Kanye made his 2010’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy album into a visual album

  • Beyonces  Lemonade album  is a visual album but telling a story of what Jay Z dids to her.

Purpose of music videos

  • Purpose

  • The differnet styles of music viedo allows the listener to connect to the artists.As listeners we catch on to trends such as fashion and dance trends.

Music videos are able to give the artists, directors and film makers a way to express the creativity and passion for what they enjoy doing.  In modern music videos are primarily ​made to be used as a marketing device for the artists and to promotes the sale of the artist. Music videos promotes the artists talents, singing, acting, dancing and more.  

For example Beyonce started her career in a girl group called destiny's child and then she started her solo career and started a brand called  Ivy Park.

 

Destiny's Child took a break from recording music. While they were taking their break Beyonce released her solo debut album, Dangerously in Love. Two singles from the album Crazy in Love  and  Baby Boy were one of the most successful albums of that year.  After Destiny's Child split, Knowles released her second album. BGrammys.

The different music​ videos that have been created promotes the image of the artists. 

The different artists fans can watch their videos continually no matter where they are or what ever mood they are in. The artists music videos  gives their fans the idea of what they are and what their look and sound is. The video gives artists the opportunity to give themselves a brand or for them to change their image. By the artists giving themselves a brand  it helps them to gain a reputation which makes their brand stronger.

Vanessa Hudgens was a Disney star that was in high school musical. A photo of her was sent out and that didn't give her the image she wanted. All the fans thought she was innocent but she had to prove that she was innocent.

  • Artists Belief

In this music video it talks about loyalty and that we should be loyal to each other no matter what. Kendrick Lamar says that " All we ask is trust" meaning that people will ask for trust from us. Through out the chourus he repeats the word "Loyalty" to us. He says the line "All we got is us" saying that all at the end of the day friends will betray us and we only got our selfs.

At the beginning of the video you see a dog barking as the intro continues you see an establishing shot  and then cuts into a room where you have women surrounding Kendrick while he is blindfolded.As the beat changes they cut into another location of  Kendrick. As the song cuts  to a different scenes you see Rihanna in them. 

  • Product Placement

Is when the music video acts as an advert with brands that are on the top of the lists. Artists choses brands that are made for their audience age group.As this will promote the artists audience.  

In this music video Post Melon uses Rolls Royce and Mercedes Benz cars is used as product placement in his music video this is because of that these type of cars represent his wealth. In the video it started with that he driving the Rolls Royce car around. Through out the video you only see the Rolls Royce but no Mercedes Benz. There are no feturing  artists in this song you only see Post Molone.

  • The song 

Artists songs are needed to promote and the world of musician good artists are easy to miss. Artists need to use different methods that are avaiable to get their fans listening to their music. People is using different music platform such as youtube, spotify, apple music and other. Youtube is the most popular platform as you are able to hear new song and have missed your chance to shazam it. Having a music video it is able to give the artists more visability and exposure then they already have. The audience now want to see the song and the video together. The fans want to learn more about the artist just from the video. They want to be able to share it with their friends.

  • The Brand

The artists and the record label has to ask them how they want the artist to been seen.​ The style, approach, and content will reveal areas of who they are even if it is not clear in the video. The artists might have a different idea that leads them into a different direction.​

 

In the video it talks about the person feels powerless. The artists are dressed in dull colour at the beginning of the video but as the video goes on there are scenes that have brightened up but some scenes still have dull coloursin the video. it goes on tosee the artists in a boxing ring with an appoinment .

  • Synergy

When a film has been featured in the music videos. This draws the audience attention to the music video because of their favourite actor and actresses are in the film. The fans spreads this type of news round more because of that their favourite singer is singing or that the storyline attract them. This gives them the oppertunity to promote the different products. It gives them more ways to promote their product.

  • Directors

A music video is a jumping off point for directors to express their creativity in it. Directors are able to create the dramatic part of the the music video. It gives them an oppertunity to bring new ideas forward and start the music video into a new direction. The young talent are able to have an oppertunity in the industry. Young talent are able to be found just by the social media. They are able to create a video of them in their bedroom with a musical instrument and they are able to be found and shared amongst the different social media platform. 

  • Directors perspective

These's short films has the ability to reach the artists fans that like their music video.Short films dont get as much veiwers as a music videos does that is becuase they often need the short films need to be self funded by the people that are creating it. For the short films they have to take money out of their own pockets rather than being funded whereas music videos have money has money behind it to support the music video. For the short film they have to start of scratch due to that no one puts any thing towards the short film.

  • Extension of income

The record label brings in a new artists put some money itno them and then as their career builds up they will increase the profit this means that the artists will start building up their fans so that the artists can encourage their fans  to buy albums, attend their concerts and buy their merchandise this could be because that the fan like their music and they want to see how they will act in live and wants a piece of merchandise to prove that they were at their favourite artists concert.

Types of music videos​

Narrative:

A narrative music video is when the music video tells a story through a series of events that have happened. The story being told its protagonists. Narrative music videos are considered to be similar to a short film. Theses kind of music videos can feature a performance from the artist. Some may have the artist acting rather than performing and some won't have  the artist in the video at all. The main focus of narrative-based music videos is the story being told its protagonists.

Titanium is about a boy who destroys the school and gets hunted down by the police and runs away but gets caught. it has no featuring artists in ths music video.

Performance:

A performance-based video shows the artist, band or group performance throughout the song and sometimes can play throughout the whole video. This type of music video is based around a concept or an idea. 

It will also have some choreography in the video to engage the audience. Some artists might decide to have a recording of live performance, shoeing the artistic talent that is not captured in the recording, such as capturing the energy and enthusiasm of live fans.

Conceptual: 

A conceptual music video is when the lyric and the video don't go together. This happens when the director has one idea that is different to the song. It will have unusal  content. It will have a mixture of narrative or perfomance. Sometimes the audience may finish the video to figure out what is going on or what they are doing.They also might become intrested.

Codes and convention

Hip Hop

In this video, the artists have decided to do a hip hop song. In the video, it shows different outside locations such as her walking down the street, stand ing on a balcony. She has some scenes inside towards the ends where they are all dancing together. The singer wear revealing clothes and lavish jewellery. The song is fast pace it is cut to the beat . It is also has a fast cut to it. It shows off the artists wealth by doing a close up on her grill and her jewellery. This music video is performance because the artist is performing to the camera.

POP

This video is a bright and colourful setting. The video is very stylised and rehersed. The video has a structure to it. The artist is presented in a sexual and seductive way to the audience. Music videos has choreographed dance routines. The video has a mix of  narrative and performance. The director uses closes ups to show the artists they also will use long shots to show the setting in the video. they will choose a theme that is associated with teenagers.

Codes and conventions:

I thought that we could use  these in our music video multi screen, lip syncing,  chorography and lighting.

Both these music videos have different codes and conventons.  The hip hop video uses different codes and conventions such as the setting. The setting could be outdoors such as on the street and more. The artists could be dressed in revealing clothes and men would be dressed in a specific style.  Where as pop the setting would be bright and colourful it wuld have cheographed dance routines. The artists would be dresses in a sexual and  seductive way. both videos woud have a theme that wuld be targeted to the

The line "it's complicated" is suggesting that the people could be having a fight or that it is complicated because someone that is in love with some one is in a relationship. 

"It always is " is saying that it is on going and that it wont stop. 

​"That's just the way it goes" meaning that it will go the way the it goes.

​"Feels like I've waited so long for this" telling us that they have waited  a long time for something.

"I wonder if it shows" tells us that that they are wondering if their emotions are showing on the face.

"Head under water" suggests that they are having a lot of trouble.

" It never felt so good" tells us that it feels better than what they have felt before.

"Cause I can feel it coming over me" means that they have a feeling coming over their body.

"I wouldn't stop it if I could" suggest that they wont stop it no matter what.

"When loves takes over (yeah-ah-eah)" tells that love will  take over. This line is repeated.

"You know you cant deny" telling us that they cant deny the feeling that. This line is repeated.

"Cause somethings here tonight" saying that there is special tonight. This line is repeated

" Give me a reason" suggests that this means that it gives the person a reason. 

"I gotta know"  shows that the person needs to know the reason. 

"Do you feel it to?" suggests that they are asking the  question  to someone else.

"Cant you see me here on overload tells us that they aren't happy and that they are ready  to tell them stuff that t don't want to say.

"And this time I blame you." meaning that the person has done something that the other person is not happy with.

"Looking out for you to hold my hand" suggests that the person was looking out for them by holding their hand.

"It feels like I could fall" tells us that they could fall down off something.

"Now love me right, like I know you can" it suggests that they want the person to love them the right way.

"We could lose it all " tells us that they could lose everything they have. 

"I-I-I'll be loving you all the time, its true" suggest that they  person would be loving  heir partner all the time.

"Cause I-I-I'll want to make it right, with you" suggest that they want to do right by each other.

I set my self task which I did achieve which was to add the link of my timeline to my website and to get the homework that was due yesterday but I didn't do it which meant that I handed it in today. What I will do is make sure I keep an eye on the time and keep to my time management scheme that I set my self. I will try to hand in my homework on time as well. I think that doing the tasks we did today went well was that we chose a song after looking into different dance songs.

Initial idea mind map

Characters:

I thought we could have 3 females two that are the friends and  1 that is the main female character. I also thought the male could have a friend .

Narrative:

What we could do is that we could have a girl that is with her friends in the park having fun and relaxing.But there is a  guy that is always in the park. She develops a crush over time . She is scared to tell him but her friends figure it out and tells her to tell him so she eventuallys tells him and they get in the relationship

Costumes:

 The character could dress in casual clothes such as jeans with a nice top with some accessories such as earing, necklaces and bracelets. We would like them to wear make-up in the music video. 

Theme: 

The theme that I thought that fits with the music video was love and relationships as the video narrative gives us that intention

Locations: 

I thought for our music video we could use multiple different locations that are outside and inside such as the Starbucks at the college, the park, the halls at college, the street.

Secondary research.

I learnt that the video should be intresting and eye catching . The video would have bright colours that are added when they arte editing. Some songs have an upbeat tempo which means when editing they have to be able to cut to the beatand having an upbeat music video. This means to our idea is that we as a group we need to make sure that we use these different things to make a good music video.

I learnt that its not about telling a narrative but it will show footage of their concerts which will promote their other performances. I learnt that in videos they use iconography which means that the props they use will give us an interpretation of the prop being used. Mise-en-scene when the video is aimed at a target audience and the location they use. The pay attention to the clothes the clothes they wear. This means that we get to know what we need to make our video really good and that we need to pay attention to the little details

As previously said the songs are upbeat but the environment is happy. The music increases people emotions. The artists want the  videos to be fun. The music videos would normally have a dance routine in them. Where sometimes the artists and the dancers have the same outfit on. The colours they use for this type of music video they tend to use bright colours so that they will stand out. this will be use full for our music video cause we can make the environment into what it needs to be. We will be able to use different thing in the video. we would us bright colours

My progression in todays lesson was alright i was able to finish the first task and start the second task. When in class i will maker sure that i keep to time  so that I can get as much done in the time as possible. My success in the lesson is finishing my questionnaire and distributing it in the lesson. In the lesson we had our first production meeting we discussed all of our ideas and chose an idea. What I need to do is to finish of work that I haven't completed by next week Wednesday as i wont me in on Monday this will include Mondays work as well.

Music video analysis

Camera techniques

at the beginning of the video it has establishing shots of different locations. You see a long shot of her walking down the street. Through out  the video you get a number close up of her face. They also have medium shots, medium long shots and more establishing shots.

They used dark colours for when she is in the dark dress but then when she's is in a bright colour outfit that use a brighter colour for it.

Target audience would be young adult that are females that are in waorking class this would be becuase they are able to relate with what the lyrics are trying to say to us and that they cou;ld have gone through something

Theme and tone

the theme of the video is romance and relationships

The tone is soft but loud. this is reflected in the music video through the clothes she is wearing and the make up colour.

The locations that were picked were sensible for the music video as it gives us the intentions that they are trying to give us .I also think they did this because of how the lyrics link to the different scenes

Mis-en-scene

they use different props to give the target audience an idea of why it is in the video the lighting is suttle but bright. they dressed the artist in dark colours at first but then the artist was in bright colours. the artists make up was suttle th artists hair was curly but flowing down. the locations were at the beach, on the streets and indoors. the colours were light but bright.

David Guetta is born on the 7 November 1967 . He was born in Paris.He has a wife called Cathy Guetta and three children named Tim Elvis Eric Guetta, Angie Guetta and Tim Guetta. 

David Guetta is a famous music producer and a house music DJ who has done a number  collaborations include songs like Titanium and She Wolf with the Australian singer Sia, Usher. He started working as a DJ in the 1980’s. During this time would play at night clubs which he kept doing till he released his first album in 2002. He came int the international music scene where he had a  chance meeting with Robert Owens, the America Rhythm , Blues and House singer, at one of his  performances.  His latse album ‘Nothing but the Beat’ and  the remix album, ‘Nothing but the Beat 2.0’. There is  a documentary that has been created on him that is called ‘Nothing But the Beat’ and it captures his journey to fame.In August of  2009 he released another studio album which he titled ‘One Love’. It was his fourth album and was followed by the release of the singles ‘When Love Takes Over’ with Kelley Rowland 

Kelly Rowland was born on February 11, 1981, in Atlanta, Georgia. In the 1990s she became a founding member of the  girl group Destiny's Child, which won multiple Grammy Awards and sold millions of records. She has since recorded several solo albums and served as a judge on competition series like The X Factor and The Voice. She grew up being inspired by Whitney Houston . She sang in church choirs. 

Kelly  moved to Texas. In 2002, Rowland made debuted a solo album called Simply Deep  featuring a duet with rapper  named  Nelly, called Dilemma, which spent a couple of months at the top of the charts.She  released a second solo album in 2007. The album received only moderate success and, two years later, she fired manager Matthew Knowles.  Here I Am (2011), was released through the label Universal Motown. Kelly co-wrote most of the tracks for fourth studio album, Talk a Good Game (2013) which featured  Wiz Khalifa and her former Destiny's Child band mates  ideas .

In November 2018, Rowland released her first single in years, simply titled "Kelly." She followed in early 2019 with "Crown," with both tracks to be included in an upcoming album. Kelly did some judging on X factor, the Australian version of the voice and chasing destiny. When love take over made Guetta win a Grammy.

 

Questionaire analisys

 I also have some paper versions of the questionnaires. For this question, some of the people were under 13 this shows us that this age group listens to dance music and watch the videos. the pie chart shows us that 14-18 has the biggest section also on the paper questionnaires is the biggest section is this also tells us that we also had some that enjoy dance music videos and they have opinions for them.    19-22 have opinions because of that they might be the target audience for a specific song. 23+ is also part of the target audience but they might not like the genre dance.

On this chart, it shows that females listen to the genre more than males even though they listen to the genre but females enjoy it more because they can relate to the lyrics more and the situation more than males can. On the paper version I have 8 females and 9 males this shows that more males listen to dance genre more than females. This tells me that both genres like a dance. In total both females and males come to an equal total that both listen to genre dance

In this response people have said different things such as they said they like the dancing, that they are always full of energy and that they like the different  locations . the paper version gives similar thing like the dance routines, location, the characters and the outfits hat they wear.They could say this because of that they like the certain things that is in the video or that they are into the a specific thing. the age group would be into these kind of things and that both gender can be it this.

For this question I asked what they expect to see in the music video people in the most popular age bracket said the things they most want to see or what they would like to see in the music video. They said that they would like to see dancing, different scene that cut to the beat, they also want see different locations, they want to see a relationship. On the paper  version they mainly wanted to see a relationship between two people that has problems . This could be because they  enjoy what they have seen this will probably cause them want to see it in a certain. People of both genders would be able to enjoy it.

In this question the age group from both genders answered questioned. Most of them said they wanted a relationship that has a problem such as break up or that they are having problem that they can over come their trouble. Some of them they wanted so see romance and love which was majorty said but this is the theme. some of them said that they want to see singing  and dancing. this is what the age racket enjoys to watch.

They suggested  that we should create a narrative that invloves a relationship having problems such as breaking, jelousy or that they arnt in the right place so it gets complicate. People has suggested that we create a love story of where two people are meeting each other for the first time and that they fall in love straight away. this shows that the age group and both genders enjoy watching this type of things and that they would watch it.

For this analysis people has suggested that the characters should wear casual clothing that is probably loose but not to dressy as this could make it look to formal. They suggested that they wear jeans and a top as this how people in the age bracket that is most popular dress and that it is a popular style. some said to dress them up as in the video the artist is in a formal dress.  some said that we should dress the characters in party clothes as the music gave them this kind of vibe.Both genders suggested this kind of things

In the pie chart it shows that some of the people thinks that we should have dancing in our video but other don't know if we should this one especally might not happen in our video as we would have to find people that are willing to do it. Dan ing in the age bracket is a major thing as it popular for people to see in music videos so people in both gender enjoy watching it no matter what. I found out that people expect to see some dancing in the  kind of music video we want to create so I think that we might have to come up with an idea that co-operates this idea in the video.

In this analysis people have suggested different elements that they like in a dance music vide most people said that they like the locations and the setting this could be due to the  scenery and how it links int he video. Also they said about dancing, the out fits and they way the character dresses this show that they are intrested in the different aspects of the music video. In the age bracket this what they would most enjoy so they would pick out what they enjoy and think why hthey would both genders would watch the film and say they like a certain aspect of the music video.

My progression in today's lesson I had to do the homework which was to get 25 respondents by today so that meant that I had to go to the library and print out my questionnaire and handing it out to people in the college until I get 25 which I did meet eventually. I had to start doing my analysis which I didn't complete doing which I will complete before Friday 10.45.  

The final idea

The idea we had as a group  was that a girl and a guy go on a couple of dates but they go as friends to test the waters. However they are both at the same party they bump into each and they talk and they say how they feel and decide to become girlfriend and boyfriend.

Locations:

we decided that we are going to film some scenes at college like in the Starbucks and the TV studio to use the green screen. We also decided to  film offsite such as a park so we can use different settings in the video. 

Codes and conventions

We thought we could use split screen so that we could see them messaging each other. We thought we could  use lip syncing in the music video to give a effect.

Product research 

In my group I will be doing the role of production assistant this means that I will be supporting my group in various thing meaning that I would need to be able to keep things organised.  

We need to make sure that we are cutting to the beat and that we are editing it to the beat so that when the beat changes the location changs with a different scene. This would add an effect to the audience as it would make them more intrigued

In the video, it explains how to create the multi-screen this would give the audience an effect to think about. This teaches us what to do and how to edit it.

Character:

We decided on having two main characters which is a boy named Johnny and a girl named Ashley. They are both going to have friends Ashley is going to have 2 friends where as Johnny is going to have 1 friend. As this will make our video more engaging to the audience

Props&Costumes 

we have decide for the props we are going to use a phone,drinks and red cups. The costumes we decided that the characters are going to wear is casual clothes so that they are all dressed up. We thought that they could wear something simple but dressy

My progression in today's lesson was quite a struggle but I understood the basics . I made sure that I took some notes down during class after going through the slides i understood what we need to do for target audience why and who we need to aim at. in tomorrows class we need to the target profiles and put that on our websites. In todays lesson I met Sarah and she helped me to understand more. my goal is to finish my check list.

In the lesson, we finished everything that was due I had to do a few tweaks and make sure that everything was there.I started to do the target audience and upload it to my website. We planned our pitch and had a figure who is doing what. we also had a production meeting discussing our pitch but also making sure that we were all up to date. My goal is to finish the pitch.
